How long does the thermochromic effect in color-changing cups and color-changing inks last?
Thermochromic mugs are a new type of ceramic mug. People are drawn to them primarily for their color-changing feature. They can also be customized to meet customer needs—featuring photos, patterns, text, or logos—using a heat-transfer process. A colored thermochromic coating is then applied over the original design. When hot or cold water is poured into the mug, the transferred pattern appears, creating a unique experience that is both magical and thoughtful.

How long do these color-changing mugs last? Generally, they last about 2–3 years. As such, whether the color change is permanent depends on the thermochromic coating. This coating is formulated using thermochromic pigments, which have specific storage and usage requirements: Thermochromic pigments are inherently unstable systems (difficult to alter once stabilized), and their lightfastness and heat resistance are far lower than those of ordinary pigments. Storage and usage precautions: They should be stored in a cool, dry, and completely dark environment, and exposure to strong sunlight and UV radiation should be avoided during use. The thermal stability of thermochromic pigments in the colored state differs from that in the colorless state. Stability in the colored state is higher than in the colorless state. Therefore, varieties with lower color-changing temperatures should be stored in a refrigerator. Under the conditions described above, avoid prolonged exposure to temperatures above 75°C. Consequently, the color-changing time of a thermochromic cup depends on the user’s storage conditions. If stored and used properly, it can remain colored for a long time!
